Wild Honey

…then I remember little, and that little, vaguely….. an invisible touch, too near to be seen or measured

Revolution

Cement mixers coughed and came to a halt; the men swarmed off the rooftops and scrambled down the scaffolding as though abandoning a stricken battleship...

First Encounter

...it stood on a bare brown rock in the sinking sun - a pile of squat houses like cubes of pink sugar,

Sun Dazed

…I met a new kind of heat, brutal and hard, carrying the smell of another continent. As I came down the mountain this heat piled up, pushing against me with blasts of sand so that I walked half-blind … obsessed once again by thirst.

Segovia

….the aqueduct seemed both benevolent and mad, its jets of masonry vaulting the sky, and the huge blocked feet coming down on the town and throwing everything out of scale.

Green Oasis

…a thousand miniature patios - each a nest of green repeated in endless variations - its whispering presence, seen through grilles and doorways, gave an impression of perpetual afternoon, each house turning its back on the blazing street outside to lie coiled around its moss-cool centre
